Rainy season falls can cause serious injuries, especially in elderly
Monsoon slips raise risk of hip and wrist fractures, doctors warn
The monsoon season brings cool weather and relief from the summer heat, but it also brings hidden dangers. Wet roads, slippery floors, and poor visibility can increase the risk of slipping and falling. Doctors say that every year during the rainy season, hospitals see more cases of fractures, sprains, and other orthopaedic injuries.
While a small slip may only cause minor bruises in some people, for others, especially older adults, it can lead to serious injuries like hip and wrist fractures. Experts warn that these injuries can affect mobility for a long time if not treated quickly.
Dr Nishit Jayant Shah, an orthopaedic specialist at Apollo Hospital, Pune, says monsoon-related falls are common and can sometimes become dangerous. He explains that the rainy season creates risky conditions both inside and outside homes.
Wet floors, muddy roads, and slippery staircases can make walking unsafe. Even a moment of carelessness can lead to a fall.
Young people also face injury risks
Monsoon injuries are not limited to elderly people. Young adults and active individuals are also at risk during this season.
Rainwater makes roads, parks, and playgrounds slippery. This can cause ankle sprains, twisted knees, and other injuries. People who play sports or ride motorcycles and bicycles are especially vulnerable.
Dr Shah says ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries during the rainy season. This happens when the foot twists suddenly on uneven or wet surfaces.
Knee injuries are also common, especially when people make sudden movements while running or playing sports. Wet roads can also increase road accidents because tyres lose grip on slippery surfaces.
Some common signs of ligament injuries include pain around the joint, swelling, bruising, difficulty walking, stiffness, and a feeling that the joint is unstable.
In many cases, these injuries improve with rest and basic treatment. But if the pain is severe, doctors may suggest physiotherapy, braces, or even surgery.
Experts say it is important not to ignore pain after a fall. What may look like a small injury can sometimes become serious later.

Why elderly people need extra care
Doctors say older adults face the highest risk during the monsoon.
As people grow older, their muscles become weaker, their reflexes slow down, and their balance becomes less stable. Because of this, they may not be able to recover quickly if they slip.
One of the most serious injuries among senior citizens is a hip fracture. According to Dr Shah, this type of injury is common during the rainy season.
Hip fractures usually happen when an elderly person falls sideways. The impact on the hip bone can cause a break, which often needs surgery.
Signs of a hip fracture include strong pain in the hip or groin, inability to stand or walk, a shorter leg on one side, and the injured leg turning outward.
Doctors say immediate treatment is very important in such cases. Delaying treatment can make recovery more difficult.
Wrist fractures are also common in both young and old people. This happens because when people fall, their natural reaction is to stretch their hands forward to stop themselves.
This action puts pressure on the wrist bones, which can lead to fractures. In older adults, weaker bones increase this risk even more.
Another reason for falls in elderly people is joint pain. Rainy weather can make arthritis and other joint problems worse.
Pain, stiffness, and swelling can reduce movement and balance, making slips more likely.
Doctors suggest some simple steps to stay safe during the monsoon. Wearing shoes or slippers with good grip is one of the best ways to avoid slipping.
People should use handrails while climbing stairs and walk slowly on wet surfaces. Rushing in rainy weather can be dangerous.
Keeping floors dry at home is also important, especially in bathrooms and kitchens where water can collect easily.
Doctors also advise people to stay physically active. Light exercise helps improve balance, muscle strength, and flexibility.
If someone falls, it is important to seek medical help, even if the injury looks small. Some fractures may not show clear signs immediately.
The good news is that modern orthopaedic treatment has improved a lot. Many injuries can now be treated with medicines, physiotherapy, and better rehabilitation methods.
Serious fractures or ligament tears may need surgery, but recovery is often faster than before because of advanced medical care.
Experts say prevention is the best way to stay safe during the monsoon. A little caution can help avoid serious accidents.
The rainy season can be beautiful, but it is also a time to stay alert. Whether young or old, taking care while walking can make a big difference and keep injuries away.
